A keycap puller is a small wire loop that hooks under a keycap and lifts it straight up without scratching the cap or bending the switch underneath. You could try prying caps off with your fingers or a knife, but that is slow, it marks up your keycaps, and it is an easy way to snap a switch stem. The puller does it cleanly in a second.
