What are Choc spacers

Choc spacers are tiny stickers that stop a keycap's internals from knocking into the switch housing at the bottom of a keypress. It's a niche fix: only a few switch and keycap combinations have this problem, but when they do, you get a faint collision that's especially annoying on silent switches. Here's what they are and when you actually need a set.

A Choc spacer is a small PET sticker, about 0.5 mm thick. You peel one and stick it to the top of the keycap's stem, which lifts the cap by just that fraction so its inner walls clear the switch housing through the whole press. The collision it prevents only happens at the very bottom of the travel, when the key is pressed all the way down, and it shows up as a small knock or unpleasant noise rather than anything that stops the key working. Raising the cap a hair means that contact never happens. It doesn't change how the switch feels otherwise.

Most Choc builds never need spacers. The issue is specific to a handful of combinations where the keycap and switch don't quite clear each other. By far the most common is Ambient Choc switches paired with most MBK sizes. Ambient is a line of silent Choc switches from LowProKB, sold under model names like Twilight and Nocturnal and also carried by other vendors. Being silent is exactly why the knock stands out: there's no click to cover it. The cause is Ambient's slightly different mould design, so other, more common Choc switches usually clear the same caps without help.

A few other keycaps can run into it too, including TaiHao THT and ZSA Voyager caps. Plenty of profiles never have the problem: LDSA and DDC, for instance, clear fine on their own.
